New Year's Eve Bash

We kept things a little more low-key this year (last year we had a house full!) due to New Years' Day landing on a Sunday.  We had our good friends down - but, no pictures to prove that ;)  So you're just gonna have to believe me!  We had an early celebration with the younger kids so they were in bed at a half decent time - then the rest of us celebrated as usual at midnight!  We had a great time, playing games and eating meatballs.  Yes, this was the highlight of the night for Alvar especially...the meatballs (despite the constant "can I have a meatball yet" from 4:30pm till 9pm - I did make him wait till 9pm before being allowed to eat them - 9pm was when I brought out most of the food for the guests to eat!).
Sara partying it up - all the way till 8pm!!
Alvar VERY happy to finally enjoy the meatballs!

Annual Gingerbread Houses

Every year I like to let the kids make gingerbread houses over the Christmas holidays.  Some years it's been a bit tricky to try to share one house for 3 kids - who gets what side etc. can be a bit frustrating as I try to keep it even between the 3 of them!  Problem solved this year though.  I found a kit that had 5 miniature houses in it, perfect!  Each kid had their own, plus one for me (which I didn't even do in the end - we just ate the leftover pieces instead!).  The kids enjoyed decorating as usual - maybe we'll actually eat the gingerbread this year too as it's not one big house!

Iron Man

Alvar scored the "big one" on freecycle.  He was looking for a simple workout bench and so posted a "wanted ad" on freecycle in hopes on someone having one laying around.  Well, he received one response - and this was it!  Score one for Alvar...this is like the "super-man" version of a simple bench!  3 of us can work out together at the same time!  Guess that means I'll have to join Alvar in the goal for washboard stomachs and buns of steel!!

Babysitter in the Making

Esther spent a good part of today hanging out with her cousin, Zane.  She fed him, burped him and helped him fall asleep - you are going to make a FANTASTIC babysitter Esther!!

Home Decorating

Alvar and I finally found something to put up over the mantle, who knew it would take over a year to get some sort of  artwork (photograph in our case) up there!  I'm glad it's done now (thanks Alvar!), I feel that our house is slowly becoming "finished"!
I'm thinking of painting the mantle now though...what do you think?  A nice brown shade (with red/orange tones to match the picture frame)....would that make the mantle "pop-out" a bit more?

"Boksing" Day

Today we had our present exchange at my side of the family (getting a date together can become so hard as families get bigger and there are other families to compete with!)
Esther enjoying some one on one time with Zane
My Mom gave Sara and Caidence identical sweaters today...don't they look cute!!
 Showing some cousin love here!
Awww...look at the twins!  My Mom also gave my sister and I identical outfits for Christmas too...don't we look cute!!

Nice Face Anna!

On Anna's last day of school one of her classmate's mom came in and painted the kids' faces.  Anna was pretty happy with the result!

Super Sara!

It's amazing what a tea towel can transform your kids into!

Build-A-Bear

Anna received a DIY teddy bear for Christmas from Caleb this year.  She was able to sew and stuff her own bear - and was super excited about it!
Nice big sewing needle here (no painful poking possible!)
Working very intensely (love the concentration on the kids' faces when they are "into" what ever it is they are doing!)
The finished product!  Super cute - and turned out quite well.
Way to go Anna!

Big Helper

Sara helped me put the groceries away today, I gave her a bag to take in while I gathered the rest.  By the time I got back to the kitchen the fridge was open and she was being my big helper by putting stuff away.  I think we'll just have to work on perishable and non-perishable food items :)

Look Who Dropped in at Our Backyard!

Esther could barely contain herself when she spotted this beauty on our fence in the backyard!  I think it might be a falcon?  Anybody out there know for sure?

Presents!

Saturday afternoon we enjoyed opening presents with our own family.  We hadn't "promised" the kids a specific time - but kind of sprung it on them instead...which they seemed quite ok with :)
Sara got quite into it here...last year she didn't quite get it - this year however, she understood fully that there was some good stuff in the wrapping!
We tend to get the same type of gifts for the kids each year. This year guitars were handed out to everyone .  Although they can be loud, the kids are enjoying these things immensely!!(even Sara can rock it out on the guitar!) Esther has even written her own chords already and is teaching herself how to play it properly.  I love a good "score" (aka - when all the kids are happy with the gifts...) - and their faces were beaming - it makes gift giving all the more fun!!!

I Guess it Could be a Bed

What ever works for Sara, and it does seem as if her baby is sleeping happily on the bench!

Score!

Sweet find on freecycle today...this is from IKEA - I've been looking for something like it (there are a couple different sizes/shapes) for a while - and was willing to pay for a second hand one (even second hand can be pretty pricey).  Well, freecycle pulled thru for me and had one for me for free!  Now I just have to pick up the plastic bins to slide in it - and then I can organize some toys!

Bake Exchange

I was looking back on the blog and realized that this could be our 6th year now that we've held our annual Bake Exchange - I love these kinds of traditions!  It's an evening where the ladies get out - enjoy an evening of socializing, singing, eating - and this year even playing games :)  I look forward to this evening every year (and maybe Alvar a little bit more - who doesn't like baked goods!).
 Singing Christmas Songs
 Helen playing piano for us
 Mmmm
 mmmm
This is the game we played - I think it was called the "Paper Game" - I'm not sure it actually has an official name - but it was fun either way!  You cut up pieces of paper so you have the same amount of sheets as you do people participating.  The first page is a random line - preferably something "drawable".
Then your package of paper is passed to the person to your left - they read your random line and draw a picture depicting what you've written.
Again, the bundle of paper is passed to the left.  This person may only see the drawing (they may not read the original line) and must write a line describing what they see in the picture.
This continues on till all the papers are filled (each person has had a chance to either draw a picture or write a line on every persons' pack of paper).
The idea of the game is to stay as close as possible with the original random line.
However, depending on the artists and the writers this is not always the case.
As we saw with this bundle of papers...
We began with a girl loosing her scarf in the wind, and ended with a poor gentleman being electrocuted as he cut down his Christmas tree...hmmm....how did that happen?
We had a lot of laughs over the game (there were 8 stories we read thru - some pretty good, and ones like this one that were way off base!).
Another lovely evening ladies - as always I look forward to gathering again next year!

Can I Vacuum Please?

Caleb already asked to vacuum on the way home from the bus stop today - I think this will be his new calling for a while :)
Thanks Caleb!  It's nice to know that the floor will be needle free with you around!

Time-Lapse of a Christmas Tree

Alvar picked up our Christmas Tree tonight - it's a bit of a gamble on what kind of tree you end up getting as they are all bundled up tightly with no real way of knowing what you're going to get!

I think Alvar did a great job picking out our tree (he's got a whole technique down...he might tell you for a small price on how to get the best tree for your buck!).
