Day 2

After a fantastic sleep (at least 12 hours!) – we were ready to take on the new day! We had a lovely breakfast consisting of rusks, gouda cheese and koek and really good coffee :) we were on our way for another day out. We took a ferry out to the Island of Rozenburg, drove around a town called Den Briel. Cute little town (what town isn’t cute in Holland!!), lots of little shops and cafes to look at. And of course a lovely canal going right thru the middle. I love the cobblestone roads, the bikes and the outdoor cafes everywhere you look. So “gezellig”!! We (well, 7 out of the 9 of us) enjoyed a coffee (in a teeny-tiny cup) with a little cookie on the side and some delicious apple cake. A little side-note on the cookie with the coffee – this was a new thing for me, but a much enjoyed little treat every time we stopped somewhere for coffee. And every place had a different type of cookie too – what a great idea! We did a little shopping in some of the stores around the area – my favourite being Hema (kind of like a Walmart I guess, has everything)
Drive-by windmill shot - I have LOTS of these, most of them with glare too! Good thing we move to a windmill the next day so I could get some decent pictures of one!

The ferry we took to the Island of Rozenburg

Cute little wooden boat in Den Briel - mint condition too!

Having some fun in the town square

Alvar stayed away from the stocks, took on the canon instead

After this we left for the Delta Works Museum in Zeeland. It was really interesting to learn how the project came into play after a major flood in the fifties - and took 30 years to complete. The area that we toured is only a small part of the Delta Works as a whole – so I guess that means we’ll have to go back to see the rest sometime :) We watched a video on the history of the Delta Works, then went on a boat tour of the Oosterschelde, the last part completed of the official Delta Works project. We saw one of the storm surge barriers up close, felt hurricane force winds in a wind tunnel (133km an hour – we had to hold onto a bar in front of us and also had to wear safety glasses – it was pretty neat), played in a big sandbox (well, Alvar did), and we went down a huge slide – I think maybe 10 times thru-out the course of the afternoon!

Alvar trying out the slide - it even gave the 'butterflies-in-the-stomach" feeling you get on a rollar coaster

Boat tour through the Oosterschelde

I'm pretty sure Caleb was jealous of this shot - who wouldn't be??

We walked along the platform between 2 of the Piers of this storm surge barrier - hard to see here, but there is a phenomenal amount of water rushing right underneath us (this was an hour before high tide)

After we got back to the Lusthof, we played around outside for a while, volleyball, trampoline, on the swingset and some little race-cars as well (it’s always fun to act like kids once and while too – we are on vacation here right?!) This night would be our last night here at the Lusthof, tomorrow we leave for our windmill house, De Verrekijker.

Apparently having a cookie with your coffee is a must for the Dutch. Everytime Martin has coffee the kids get excited because they know they get a cookie -- not a good habit to get into!
