Today we headed out to Fort Henry - I think we were all excited about seeing the fort and watching the show later on that evening. We were not disappointed!
View from the walk up to Fort Henry
One of the towers around the fort
Oma and Opa with all the grandkids
Jared's very stylish shoes...duck tape fixes everything, right?!
Another first for the kids - a walking stick! Funny thing was, in my first pictures I was focusing on the rear of the bug, thinking that was the front! In this picture, if you look closely on the left side, you can actually see his eye - what a cool bug!
The stick hung around for a bit while we waited in line for the tickets to get into the fort
Ready now to enter the fort!
Into the main area we go!
Although not the original fort any longer, the thickness of the walls is still very impressive!
No hiding from the cannons!
Looking at the second level
We were entertained with the fife
Our new blog picture :)
The kids got a chance to participate as soldiers in training! They took it very seriously (although Anna is grinning in this picture) - they learned how to march, hold a gun and salute. A great way for the kids to enjoy the day hands on!
Caleb looking very serious
Esther looking double serious!
All the kids received diplomas with their names on it at the end of the exercise
After we toured around the fort, we returned back to camp for supper before the evening show. During the couple hours we were there, Anna decided it was time to learn how to ride a two wheeler. After refusing help from most of us...I convinced her to let me walk behind her around the block - within a couple minutes she was good to go. Apparently she rode with one hand and standing up! I think she's mastered it now!
We headed back to Fort Henry for the sunset show. Once again, we were not disappointed! What a fantastic show!!
And so we begin...the drummers and fife players filed in
The leader of the band - notice the foot - when taking their first steps while marching, the soldiers point their toes downward - it was quite a sight!
Walking in a star formation
Sara actually quite enjoyed the show. In between plugging her ears (it did get pretty loud with the artillery show) she clapped and smiled while watching!
Fort Henry's mascot - Sara was most impressed with him!
Soldiers marching in formation, super tight and no swinging of the arms - you could barely slide a piece of paper in between the soldiers it was so tight!
Yelling out the orders for the soldiers
Getting the cannons ready for firing
Smoke from firing the guns
It took a group of soldiers to pull the cannons around - quite the production
More cannon shooting
The final "end of the night" shooting of the cannons
Bagpipes
Fireworks show to end the evening. What a great show to watch - Esther looks forward to going back in grade 7 when they go for a class trip to Fort Henry again!
